CHARACTER INFO

Character: Wirt
Canon: Over the Garden Wall – Post Defeating the Beast
Age: 18

Background Information: Wiki

Personality:

1) Tell us about who your character is and what someone’s first impression would be upon meeting them.

Wirt is an incredibly introverted and awkward guy. On first meeting him, someone would most likely note his general timidity and uncertain nature. Because of that, others may consider him to be a weakling or a pushover, something that had become a teasing point by one of his companions, Beatrice, who would use it as a means of leading him through the unknown, as well as a point to try and drive him forward in the Schooltown Follies episode. He is easy to tease and get a rise out of, sometimes to the point of being detrimental, namely when Beatrice has teased him too much to the point of him doing precisely what he was told to do by someone other than Beatrice. Much to her exasperation as she attempted to get him and his brother to move on. It’s also useful to note that he has trouble with anxiety and feelings of uncertainty. For Wirt to act, he first needs some form of driving force, such as when summoning up enough courage to talk to his crush and give her a gift. Something that was brought about by his feelings of insecurity in the face of a potential romantic rival.

Or when the situation is dire enough that he has no choice but to face his fears and shortcomings and force himself to move. It’s usually in the face of hopelessness that Wirt ends up shining. Specifically, towards the final episode, when he faced the Beast and needed to save his younger brother’s life. In short, Wirt is a young man nearing the end of his puberty who struggles with anxiety and attempts to navigate an increasingly mature and uncertain world. Ultimately, he can overcome those problems and has begun to learn what it means to be an adult and to take on responsibilities while combating the stresses that come with it, both physically and mentally.

2) What is a driving force your character has? What goals do they have, what motivates them, etc?

When talking about his driving force and goals, it’s important to state that he doesn’t have many lofty goals yet. Instead, his focus is on attempting to overcome his inner issues. Specifically, he has problems with his own identity, his sense of self, and who he is and who he wants to grow into. Something that would be somewhat answered during the episode “Songs of the Dark Lantern”. He is met with this very conundrum when asked who he is by the Tavernkeeper and patrons. A question that made him pause and think—to question his sense of self and begin thinking in terms of who he is exactly. Until the patrons concluded that he was a "Pilgrim”, someone who overcomes challenges and plots their own course.

The offered role would go on to help him figure out how he wants to view himself and who he wants to be. Wirt wants to be independent and capable of facing and overcoming whatever challenges are thrown his way. However, he is still growing and figuring out life. As such, Wirt is still going to struggle when attempting to both grow into that role and find his way in the world. He knows and understands that he still has a lot of growth left ahead of him, and towards the end of his journey in the Unknown, he has realized that reaching his goal won’t be easy. But it is also that very struggle and challenge that helps to motivate him and eventually see him through to the end. This is seen during the final episode, where both he and his brother are seen talking with Wirt’s friends and crush, with Wirt looking far more confident in himself in the face of both his crush and perceived rival.

3) What are their flaws as a character? What is something they've messed up, or have done that they regret?

Wirt tends to focus a lot on himself, sometimes to the point of being contentious with others or shifting blame to someone else. While not exactly narcissistic, he hasn’t quite grown into being able to fully see things from the perspective of others until towards the very end of the show. He had come to recognize both his role as an older brother and what it means to be an adult and to accept responsibility. Particularly when looking at his relationship with his younger brother. Throughout the show, every time a problem arises, a challenge has seemingly failed or been made worse. Wirt tends to place the blame and responsibility on Greg, who is far too young to be able to make complex decisions. The Woodsman had pointed this out very clearly during the first episode, where he mentioned that, as the older sibling, Wirt is the one who shoulders all the responsibility. He is the one who needs to look after and care for both his younger brother and his own well-being. Wirt’s initial inability to fully recognize, or readily embrace, that responsibility would lead to Greg nearly becoming another victim of the Beast. And while he has grown past his inability to readily accept more adult responsibility, Wirt is still growing and learning.

One more flaw is that Wirt is not a fighter; he is more of a thinker and tends to overthink often to a fault. This is more of a reiteration, but his indecisive nature can sometimes lead to problems when it comes to time to act. Such as in the first episode when attempting to figure out whether they should stick with the Woodsman after he offers them a way out of the Unknown. Because of his backpedaling and overly worried thoughts, Wirt and his brother ultimately led to the destruction of the Woodsman’s mill and home. Causing him to become frustrated and only give them directions on how to return home, but nothing else. Or when stealing a horse to save his brother and Beatrice from a perceived danger. He is not typically the spontaneous type and generally needs to be forced to take an action or goaded into doing something (like being teased about being a pushover).

4) Optional: What is something unique and interesting about them, or what is a fun little tidbit that sets them apart from the crowd?

Wirt enjoys interior design and can differentiate between French rococo and Georgian designs. He also knows how to play the clarinet and enjoys poetry.

Abilities & Inventory: Just the clothes on his back

ARMADA SELECTION

Corsairs

Mostly due to Wirt’s attempts at trying to make himself look more free and tough than he generally is. I’d like for him to actually join in on adventures where he can flex more into a chaotic-neutral setting. As well as a means to better learn and grow as an individual. While Wirt has grown greatly after the end of the show. He still has much room to learn and grow as an individual slowly entering into adulthood. Also, it would be fun and funny to have a lanky boy joining some rough and tumble pirate crews. Skirting around the rule of law!
